Buying a used BMW M4 propshaft: what matters

Fitment on a used propshaft varies by vehicle, so a bit of detail goes a long way. Our request form covers what breakers need to know, so every quote you get back is for the correct part:

Fitment questions

Does the BMW M4 have a propshaft?

Yes – the BMW M4 is a rear-wheel-drive car (or, in xDrive variants, four-wheel drive), so it does have a propshaft connecting the gearbox to the rear differential. This is unlike some BMW 4 Series variants which are front-wheel drive, so make sure you're looking at a genuine M4 and not a standard 4 Series when sourcing parts.

Will a propshaft from an F82 M4 fit an G82 M4?

No – the F82 M4 (2014–2020) and the G82 M4 (2021–present) are entirely different generations with different platforms, drivetrains, and gearbox configurations, so their propshafts are not interchangeable. Always quote your registration to the breaker and confirm the generation before purchasing.

Does it matter whether my M4 is a Competition or a standard model when buying a used propshaft?

The Competition trim itself does not change the propshaft – what matters is the generation (F82 or G82) and whether your car is standard rear-wheel drive or the xDrive four-wheel-drive variant, as xDrive cars use a different propshaft arrangement. Confirm your drivetrain layout and generation with the breaker against your registration to make sure you get the correct part.

Will a propshaft from a 2017 M4 fit a 2019 M4?

Both a 2017 and a 2019 M4 fall within the F82 generation (2014–2020), so there is a reasonable chance they share the same propshaft, but mid-generation running-gear changes can occur and gearbox type (manual or DCT) may affect fitment. Confirm the exact part number with the breaker against both registrations before buying.

Does the xDrive M4 use the same propshaft as the standard rear-wheel-drive M4?

No – the xDrive four-wheel-drive M4 has a front driveshaft and a transfer case in addition to the rear propshaft, so the propshaft arrangement differs from the standard rear-wheel-drive car. Make sure you tell the breaker clearly whether your car is xDrive or rear-wheel drive, as fitting the wrong unit will not work.

Can I use a propshaft from a standard 4 Series on my M4?

This is very unlikely to be a straightforward swap – the M4 uses a significantly more powerful engine and different transmission compared with standard 4 Series models, and the propshaft dimensions and ratings are likely to differ. Always source a propshaft confirmed to fit the M4 specifically, and check the exact part number with the breaker against your registration.
