Second Hand Mercedes-Benz CLA Propshaft

Only the 4MATIC (four-wheel-drive) variants of the CLA have a propshaft — it connects the front-mounted engine and gearbox to the rear axle to drive the rear wheels. Standard CLA models with 2WD are front-wheel drive only and have no propshaft whatsoever. If you have a standard 2WD CLA and are chasing a driveline noise or vibration, you are more likely looking for a front driveshaft (CV shaft) rather than a propshaft — confirm your drivetrain layout from your V5C or the underbonnet plate before ordering anything.

The CLA 4MATIC range across both generations (C117, built 2013–2019, and C118, built 2019 onwards) includes models such as the CLA 220 4MATIC and CLA 250 4MATIC, as well as the AMG CLA 45 4MATIC — all of these carry a propshaft. The propshaft can differ between variants because the AMG models use a higher-torque drivetrain and may use a different shaft specification to the standard 4MATIC versions. Always confirm the exact engine code and 4MATIC variant with the breaker against your registration to ensure the shaft rating is correct for your car.

The C117 and C118 are built on different platform generations and the propshaft crosses a clear generation boundary, so fitment between the two is very unlikely. The dimensions, flange sizes, and mounting points differ between these architectures. Do not assume cross-generation compatibility — confirm the part against your specific registration with the breaker before purchasing.

The 2016 facelift of the C117 CLA was primarily a cosmetic and trim update, and the underlying drivetrain architecture was carried over, so the propshaft may well be the same across pre- and post-facelift C117 4MATIC variants of the same engine. However, whether a specific used propshaft from a 2014 car will interchange directly with a 2017 car is something you should confirm with the breaker against both registrations, as minor running changes can occur mid-generation. The breaker can cross-reference part numbers to verify compatibility before you commit.

Trim level alone does not determine propshaft fitment on the CLA — what matters is whether the car is 4MATIC or 2WD, and which engine it has. A CLA 220 4MATIC in AMG Line trim and a CLA 220 4MATIC in Sport trim would use the same propshaft, because the trim difference is cosmetic and does not change the drivetrain hardware. Focus on confirming the drivetrain type, engine code, and generation with the breaker rather than the trim badge.

The easiest way is to check your V5C registration document, where the model description will typically include '4MATIC' if four-wheel drive was fitted, or you can look at the badge on the boot lid. You can also check the vehicle identification plate in the engine bay or door shutter, or run your registration through a free DVLA or HPI-style check which will list the drivetrain. If your CLA is not 4MATIC, it is front-wheel drive and has no propshaft — a breaker will not be able to supply one for it because it was never fitted.
