A buyer's guide to used Nissan Leaf propshaft

No two propshafts are quite the same across different vehicles, so getting the specifics right matters when you buy used, second hand or a replacement. Answer a few quick questions below and breakers will only quote if they have the exact matching part in stock:

Fitment questions

Does a Nissan Leaf even have a propshaft?

No — the Nissan Leaf is a front-wheel-drive electric vehicle in all its standard forms, so it has never been fitted with a propshaft; propshafts are only found on rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive vehicles, and the Leaf is neither. If you think you need a propshaft, it's worth double-checking whether you have a Leaf or a different model entirely. You may actually be looking for a driveshaft (also called a CV shaft), which is the component that transfers drive from the front differential to the front wheels on the Leaf.

What is the difference between a propshaft and a driveshaft on the Nissan Leaf?

On the Leaf, there is no propshaft at all — a propshaft runs longitudinally between a gearbox and a rear axle, which the Leaf does not have. What the Leaf does have are front driveshafts (CV shafts), one on the nearside (NS) and one on the offside (OS), which connect the electric motor's reduction gear to the front wheels. If your Leaf has a drivetrain noise or vibration, a worn driveshaft or CV joint is the most likely culprit, and that is the part you should be searching for on a breakers' marketplace.

Could a Nissan Leaf e-4ORCE or four-wheel-drive version have a propshaft?

The Nissan Leaf sold in the UK has not been offered with four-wheel drive or e-4ORCE — that system is found on the larger Nissan Ariya, not the Leaf. Because no UK-market Leaf variant has a rear axle or rear motor fed by a longitudinal shaft, no propshaft has ever been part of the Leaf's drivetrain. If you own an Ariya or another Nissan EV with AWD, that is a different vehicle and a different parts search entirely.

I've been quoted for a Leaf propshaft by a breaker — is this a mistake?

Almost certainly yes — no variant of the Nissan Leaf sold in the UK has a propshaft, so any listing for one is likely a cataloguing error, a misidentification, or possibly a listing meant for a completely different vehicle. It is well worth going back to the breaker and confirming exactly what part they have and which vehicle it came from. What you most likely need is a Leaf driveshaft, and you should specify whether it is the nearside or offside unit, as well as the generation of your Leaf (first generation 2011–2017 or second generation 2018 onwards), as these are not interchangeable.

What part should I actually be searching for instead of a Leaf propshaft?

For a drivetrain fault on a Nissan Leaf, the parts most commonly needed are the nearside or offside front driveshaft, the CV joints on those driveshafts, or the electric motor and reduction gear assembly. When searching on a used-parts marketplace, quote your registration to the breaker so they can confirm the correct part for your generation and battery variant. Nearside and offside driveshafts are not the same part, so always specify which side when requesting a quote.
