Fitment questions

Does a Nissan Micra have a propshaft?

No — every generation of the Nissan Micra sold in the UK has been a front-wheel-drive car, which means it uses driveshafts (one to each front wheel) rather than a propshaft. A propshaft is only found on rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive vehicles, and no Micra variant was ever built with either of those layouts. If your car has a vibration or drivetrain noise, you are most likely looking for a front driveshaft (also called a CV shaft or halfshaft) rather than a propshaft.

I've been quoted a propshaft for my Nissan Micra — is that right?

That quote is almost certainly a mistake. The Micra has always been front-wheel-drive across all of its UK generations — K10, K11, K12, K13, and K14 — so none of them were ever fitted with a propshaft. It's worth going back to whoever gave you the quote and confirming whether they mean a front driveshaft, as that is the rotating shaft that actually transmits drive on a Micra.

What is the difference between a propshaft and a driveshaft on a Micra?

On a Micra, there is no propshaft at all — only driveshafts. A propshaft runs down the centre of a vehicle from the gearbox to a rear differential, which simply isn't part of the Micra's front-wheel-drive layout. The Micra has two front driveshafts (nearside and offside) that send power directly from the gearbox to the front wheels, and these are the parts that can wear and need replacing.

Could a Nissan Micra with a larger engine have a propshaft fitted?

No — even the larger-engined Micra variants sold in the UK, such as the 1.6-litre versions in the K12 generation or the performance-oriented 160SR, remained front-wheel-drive and were never built with a propshaft. Engine size does not change the driven axle layout on the Micra. If you have a higher-powered Micra and suspect drivetrain wear, a driveshaft, CV joint, or related front-end component is what you should be asking a breaker about.

What part should I actually be searching for if I thought I needed a Micra propshaft?

The most likely candidates are a front driveshaft (nearside or offside), a CV joint, or possibly a gearbox output shaft — these are the components in a front-wheel-drive car that do the job people sometimes associate with a propshaft. Symptoms like vibration, clicking on turns, or a clunking under load typically point to a worn CV joint or driveshaft on a Micra. When contacting a breaker, have your registration to hand so they can confirm the correct part for your exact engine and generation.
