Beyond the physical differences, DPF adoption and emissions standards changed significantly across that period, meaning an E60-era part may not satisfy MOT requirements on an F10 or vice versa. Always confirm exact fitment with the breaker against your registration.

The F10 5 Series ran from 2010 to 2017 with a facelift in 2013, and while the generation is the same, BMW updated several engine variants around the facelift which can affect DPF specification. Whether a pre-2013 DPF crosses over to a post-2013 car depends on your specific engine code and the Euro emissions standard the car was built to. Name the boundary to the breaker and ask them to confirm fitment against both registrations before purchasing.

Trim level — whether SE, M Sport, Luxury or M Sport Plus — does not affect DPF fitment on the 5 Series; what matters is the engine code, fuel type and emissions era the car was built to. xDrive (four-wheel drive) models use the same engine families as their rear-wheel-drive equivalents, so the DPF specification follows the engine, not the drivetrain or trim badge. Bear in mind that a DPF pulled from a different trim car may look slightly different in its surrounding heat shielding or bracketry, but the core unit is determined by the engine.

Euro 5 and Euro 6 DPFs are not straightforwardly interchangeable — the filtration standards are different, and fitting a Euro 5 unit to a Euro 6 car could cause it to fail its MOT emissions test. On the 5 Series, Euro 6 compliance broadly came in with F10 models built from around 2014 onward, though the exact cutover depends on the specific engine variant. On the F10 generation the saloon and Touring share the same engine families, so the DPF specification follows the engine code and emissions era rather than the body style.
