A lambda sensor is matched to the engine code and its emissions calibration, so crossing this generation boundary is very unlikely to give a working, MOT-legal result. Always match by engine code and confirm with the breaker against your registration rather than assuming a physical fit is sufficient.

The F10 ran from 2010 to 2016 with a mid-life facelift around 2013–2014, and while many engines carried across, some units were updated or replaced at that point with revised emissions calibration. The lambda sensor must match the engine code specifically, so a pre-facelift sensor could fit if the engine code is identical, but you should not assume this across the facelift boundary. Confirm the engine code on both donor and recipient with the breaker before buying.

Trim level has no bearing on lambda sensor fitment for the BMW 5 Series — SE, M Sport, Luxury, and Sport trims all use the same sensor determined by the engine code and emissions standard. The exhaust system follows the engine, not the interior or cosmetic specification, so you only need to match by engine code, fuel type, and sensor position. You may find minor cosmetic differences in sensor wiring clips or harness routing from a different-spec donor car, so check connector type with the breaker.

The number of lambda sensors varies by engine: many petrol engines carry two (one upstream of the catalytic converter, one downstream), while diesel engines may have one or more depending on the emissions era and exhaust aftertreatment layout. Fitting an upstream sensor in the downstream position or vice versa will cause ECU faults and failed emissions tests, so the position matters as much as the engine code. The G30 generation introduced from 2017 uses Euro 6 engines with exhaust and sensor specifications that differ from the Euro 5 and earlier engines in the F10.
