What to check when buying a used Mercedes-Benz GLS coil spring

A used coil spring that fits one vehicle won't always fit another - even within the same model range. These questions help breakers match stock to your exact vehicle before they quote:

Fitment questions

Does the Mercedes-Benz GLS actually have coil springs, or does it use air suspension?

The GLS (X166, 2016–2019, and X167, 2019–present) was available with both conventional coil spring suspension and the optional AIRMATIC air suspension system, so coil springs do genuinely exist on this model but only on variants not fitted with air suspension. If you are unsure which setup your vehicle has, check underneath or look for the air compressor and air struts – a car with AIRMATIC will not use coil springs. Make sure to confirm with the breaker whether your specific registration has coil or air suspension before ordering.

Will a coil spring from a 2017 GLS fit my 2020 GLS?

These are different generations – the 2017 car is the X166 (sold in the UK from around 2016 to 2019), while the 2020 car is the X167 (introduced for 2019 onwards) – and the two generations use different platforms and suspension geometry, so the springs are not interchangeable. Stick to sourcing an X167 spring for your 2020 car and an X166 spring for any pre-2019 car. Confirm the exact part against your registration with the breaker to be sure.

Does the engine size affect which coil spring I need on the GLS?

Engine weight does influence suspension tuning on the GLS, so a heavier V8 petrol (GLS 500 or GLS 580) may use different spring rates compared with a six-cylinder diesel or petrol variant. However, whether a specific spring from one engine variant physically fits another is something you should confirm with the breaker against your registration, as spring rate differences can be subtle and are not always reflected in the part number. Always quote your engine size and registration when asking for a quote.

Does my trim level – for example AMG Line – affect which coil spring I need?

Trim level in itself does not change the coil spring that fits, so an AMG Line badge on its own does not mean a different spring to a standard GLS of the same generation and engine. However, if your car was ordered with optional sport or lowered suspension, the spring rates and ride heights may differ from a standard car regardless of trim name – so confirm with the breaker whether your car has any suspension options beyond the standard setup. The trim name alone is not enough to rule a spring in or out.

Can I use a front coil spring from a GLS on the rear, or vice versa?

No – front and rear coil springs on the GLS are different parts with different dimensions and rates, and they are not interchangeable with one another. When contacting a breaker, always specify whether you need the nearside (NS) or offside (OS) if it is a front spring, and confirm front or rear. Getting this wrong means the spring simply will not fit correctly or safely.

I've found a coil spring from a 2018 GLS – will it fit my 2018 GLS with a different engine?

Both being 2018 cars means both are X166 generation, which is a good start, but the spring specification can vary depending on engine size because heavier engines place different demands on the suspension. Whether the exact spring from a different engine variant will interchange with yours is something to confirm with the breaker using both registration numbers, as part numbers between engine variants sometimes differ even within the same generation. Never assume a like-for-like fit based on year alone.
