It depends on the engine. Petrol-engined Mondeos use a throttle body to control airflow into the engine, so if you have a petrol variant you do need one. Most diesel Mondeos do not use a conventional throttle body in the same way — diesels control fuelling differently — so if you have a diesel, confirm with the breaker before ordering, as what you actually need may be an EGR valve or intake flap motor instead.

The Mondeo Mk3 ran from 2000 to 2007 and the Mk4 from 2007 to 2014, so these are completely different generations with different engines and different throttle body designs. A Mk4 unit will not simply swap onto a Mk3, even if both cars carry a petrol engine of similar displacement. Match by engine code first — the engine code is on your V5 or available via a VIN check — and confirm compatibility with the breaker against your registration.

Both years sit within the Mk4 generation (2007–2014), and the Mk4 received a facelift in 2010, so a 2010 and a 2013 car could have meaningful differences in ancillary components and mounting even when sharing the same engine code. If both cars share the same engine code, there is a good chance the throttle body itself is the same unit, but confirm the exact part against your registration with the breaker before buying, as mid-production changes can affect fitment.

For a mechanical part like a throttle body, trim level makes no difference — an Edge, Zetec, or Titanium with the same engine code all use the same throttle body. What matters is the engine code, fuel type, and the year within the generation. Don't pay extra or restrict your search based on trim; just make sure the donor car's engine code matches yours.

Some throttle bodies on modern Mondeos may need to be calibrated or matched to the ECU after fitting, and there is a possibility of immobiliser or software pairing depending on the specific engine management system on your car. This is something to confirm with the breaker and your fitting garage before you buy, as it could affect whether a used unit works straight away or needs additional work. The Mondeo Mk5 launched in 2015 and uses a different platform and updated engines compared to the Mk4, so these generations are not directly interchangeable.
