The CLK ran across two main generations: the W208 (1997–2002) and the W209 (2002–2009), with the W209 receiving a facelift in 2005. Indicator stalks are generally generation-specific, so a stalk from any W208 should suit another W208, and similarly within the W209 range, but always confirm against your registration with the breaker before buying.
The W209 facelift in 2005 is a known boundary, and while the underlying platform remained the same, interior and steering column components can differ between pre- and post-facelift cars. You should not assume the stalk crosses that 2005 boundary without checking – give the breaker both registration numbers so they can verify the part numbers match before you commit.
The W208 (1997–2002) and W209 (2002–2009) are separate generations with different steering column assemblies, so the stalks are not considered a straightforward swap. Confirm with the breaker against both registrations rather than assuming compatibility across that generation boundary.
Trim level does not affect indicator stalk fitment on the CLK – the stalk is determined by generation and any facelift revision, not by whether the car is Avantgarde, Elegance, or Sport. You may find minor cosmetic differences in finish or feel between stalks sourced from different trim levels, but functionally they should interchange within the same generation and facelift period.
Mercedes-Benz did share steering column components across models built on related platforms, and a stalk from a same-era C-Class (W203) or E-Class (W211) may physically resemble the CLK W209 part. However, confirming cross-model compatibility is something you must route to the breaker with your CLK's registration, as subtle differences in stalk coding or connector type can mean a stalk that looks identical will not function correctly.
Make sure the breaker can match the part to your specific registration or at minimum confirm the generation (W208 or W209) and whether your car is pre- or post-2005 facelift. It is also worth asking whether the stalk includes any cruise control or audio controls if your car has them on the column, as these vary by specification and a basic stalk will not replicate those functions.
