Fitment on a used glow plugs varies by vehicle, so a bit of detail goes a long way. Our request form covers what breakers need to know, so every quote you get back is for the correct part:
Yes, but only on diesel-engined CLKs – glow plugs are a diesel-only component used to pre-heat the combustion chamber for cold starts, and petrol engines do not have them at all. The CLK range included diesel variants across both generations, most notably the CLK 220 CDI and CLK 270 CDI, so if your CLK is a diesel you will need glow plugs, but if yours is a petrol (200K, 240, 320, 500, 55 AMG etc.) this part simply does not apply to your car. Check your V5 or a VIN check to confirm your fuel type and engine code before searching.
The W208 is the first-generation CLK (1997–2002) and the W209 is the second generation (2002–2009), and these are entirely different engine families, so glow plugs from a W208 diesel will not simply cross over to a W209. The correct plug is determined by the engine code – for example a W208 CDI engine code will differ from a W209 CDI engine code – so supply your exact engine code to the breaker rather than just the year. Never assume cross-generation compatibility without the breaker confirming it against your registration.
The W209 CLK received a facelift in 2005, and while the core diesel engine codes such as the 220 CDI generally remained consistent across pre- and post-facelift cars, there can be running production changes that affect ancillary components mid-cycle. The safest approach is to give the breaker your full engine code (found on your V5 or a VIN check) and your registration so they can confirm the exact plug specification rather than relying on the facelift year alone. Engine code matching is far more reliable than year matching for this part.
No – trim level has no effect on glow plug fitment whatsoever. Elegance, Avantgarde, and Sport are specification packages covering interior, wheels, and styling items; the diesel engine underneath is the same regardless of which trim your CLK carries. What matters is the engine code, so a CLK 220 CDI Elegance and a CLK 220 CDI Avantgarde of the same generation will take identical glow plugs.
A diesel engine has one glow plug per cylinder, so a four-cylinder CLK 220 CDI requires four glow plugs and a six-cylinder CLK 270 CDI requires six. When buying from a breaker it is worth clarifying how many they are supplying, as some will sell them individually and others as a set pulled from a donor car. Confirm the quantity alongside the engine code when you request your quote.
A year and fuel type is a useful starting point but it is not enough on its own, because 2004 sits within the W209 generation (2002–2009) and more than one diesel engine option was available. The engine code – printed on your V5 logbook or obtainable via a VIN check – tells the breaker exactly which plug specification you need and removes any guesswork. Supply the engine code and your registration when requesting quotes and you will get a much more reliable match.
