Buying a used BMW M2 exhaust manifold: what matters

Fitment on a used exhaust manifold varies by vehicle, so a bit of detail goes a long way. Our request form covers what breakers need to know, so every quote you get back is for the correct part:

Fitment questions

Does the BMW M2 actually have an exhaust manifold, or does it use a different setup?

Yes, all BMW M2 variants are turbocharged petrol engines and do have an exhaust manifold — on these engines it is the cast or fabricated header that collects exhaust gases from the cylinder head and routes them to the turbocharger. It is a genuine, serviceable part and you will find used examples listed by breakers. Do not confuse it with the downpipe or the rest of the turbo-back system, which are separate components.

Will an exhaust manifold from an F87 M2 fit an F87 M2 Competition?

The F87 generation covers the original M2 (2016–2018, S55 engine) and the M2 Competition (2018–2021, S55 engine in revised tune), and trim level does not affect exhaust manifold fitment — the same basic manifold design was used across both variants on the S55. You may find minor differences in heat shielding or bracketing between the two, so confirm the exact part number with the breaker against your registration to be sure you get the correct item. Neither colour nor Competition badging changes the fundamental fitment.

Does a manifold from an early F87 M2 (2016–2018) fit the later G87 M2 (2023 onwards)?

No — the F87 M2 uses the S55 inline-six engine while the G87 M2 uses the S58 inline-six, and these are completely different engines on different platforms, so the exhaust manifolds are not interchangeable. The G87 also moves into Euro 6d emissions territory, meaning the emissions architecture around the manifold differs significantly from the Euro 6b-era F87. Always quote your registration to the breaker so they can supply the correct unit for your generation.

Will an F87 M2 manifold from a different year within that generation cross over — say a 2016 car to a 2019 M2 Competition?

Both the standard F87 M2 (2016–2018) and the F87 M2 Competition (2018–2021) share the S55 engine, and within that generation the exhaust manifold is broadly the same design. However, there were running production changes across those years, so confirm the exact part number with the breaker against both registrations before buying — a visually similar manifold from the wrong production phase may not seat correctly or may affect emissions compliance.

Does it matter whether I buy a manifold from a manual or automatic M2?

Transmission type has no effect on exhaust manifold fitment — the manifold is determined entirely by the engine code and emissions era, not the gearbox. Both the manual and DCT-equipped M2 variants within the same generation use the same manifold, so you do not need to specify gearbox when sourcing this part. Focus your conversation with the breaker on engine code and your registration year instead.

I've been quoted a manifold described as having a catalytic converter integrated — will it pass MOT and is it the right part?

Some exhaust manifold assemblies on the BMW M2 are sold with a close-coupled catalytic converter attached, and whether a used unit meets current MOT emissions standards depends on the condition of the catalyst and the emissions era it came from — this is strong confirm-with-breaker territory. The breaker should be able to tell you the Euro emissions standard of the donor vehicle and whether the catalyst is intact, which your MOT tester will check. Never assume a visually similar manifold-and-cat assembly from a different era will pass the UK MOT, even if it physically fits.
