BMW 6 Series Intercooler Replacement Parts

Only the turbocharged variants of the BMW 6 Series have an intercooler — this covers the diesel engines (such as the 3.0d straight-six units) and the turbocharged petrol engines (such as the N55 and S55 units found in the 640i and M6). The naturally aspirated petrol engines, most notably the older V8 units in earlier cars, do not use forced induction and therefore have no intercooler. If you're not sure whether your engine is turbocharged, check the engine code on your V5 or run a VIN check before searching.

The F12/F13/F06 generation of the BMW 6 Series ran from 2011 to 2018, with a facelift introduced in 2015, so a 2012 and a 2015 car sit either side of that facelift boundary. The core engine code (N57 in the 640d) remained consistent across that generation, which is a good sign, but ancillary mountings, pipework, and intercooler positioning can change at or around a facelift — confirm with the breaker against your exact registration before buying.

On the BMW 6 Series, trim levels like SE, Sport, M Sport, and Luxury are largely cosmetic differences and do not affect which intercooler is fitted — what matters is the engine code, not the badge on the back. An M Sport 640d and a SE 640d with the same engine code should use the same intercooler. Always confirm the engine code from your V5 rather than relying on the trim name alone.

The F12 (Convertible), F13 (Coupé), and F06 (Gran Coupé) all share the same generation platform and engine family, so for a given engine code the intercooler is generally drawn from the same parts pool. Body style does not drive intercooler specification — engine code does. That said, confirm with the breaker against your registration to rule out any chassis-specific routing or bracket differences.

The M6 uses a different, more performance-oriented engine — the S63 twin-turbo V8 in the F-generation cars — which is not shared with standard 6 Series variants like the 640i or 640d, so the intercooler is not a direct swap. Engine code is the critical detail here, and M models typically have unique cooling and induction components. Supply your engine code to the breaker so they can source the correct unit for your specific car.

The most useful thing you can provide is the engine code, which you'll find on your V5 registration document or via a VIN check — it tells the breaker exactly which intercooler your car needs, regardless of what model name or badge it wears. Also have the year and mileage to hand, and note whether your car is an automatic or manual, as gearbox type can occasionally be relevant to how surrounding components are arranged. The more precise you are upfront, the less chance of ordering a part that doesn't fit.
