Fitment questions

Does the BMW 6 Series have an ignition switch, or does it use a different start system?

It depends on the generation. The E63/E64 6 Series (2003–2010) used a traditional barrel-style ignition switch where you insert and turn a key. The F06/F12/F13 generation (2011–2018) moved to a push-button start system with a separate ELV (electronic steering lock) and start button module, so there is no conventional ignition switch barrel in the same sense. Make sure you know which system your car has before searching for parts.

Will an ignition switch from a 2006 BMW 6 Series fit my 2008 6 Series?

Both years fall within the E63 coupe and E64 convertible generation (2003–2010), so the ignition switch barrel is broadly from the same family of parts. That said, BMW did revise various electrical components across this generation, so confirm the exact part number with the breaker against your registration before buying. Never assume a direct swap without that check.

Does it matter whether my 6 Series is a 630i, 645Ci or 650i when sourcing an ignition switch?

For the E63/E64 generation, the ignition switch barrel is a steering-column-mounted component that is generally shared across engine variants rather than being engine-specific, so the 630i, 645Ci and 650i should not differ in this respect. However, confirm with the breaker using your registration, as software or ELV coding can vary and may affect which units are compatible. The engine size alone is not the deciding factor here.

Does the trim level — for example 635d Sport or 650i M Sport — affect which ignition switch I need?

Trim level does not affect ignition switch fitment on the BMW 6 Series; the switch is a mechanical and electrical column component unrelated to interior or exterior specification. You may find cosmetic differences such as the key or surround finish on a part pulled from a different trim car, but the core fitment and function are the same. Check condition rather than worrying about which trim the donor car was.

Can I use an ignition switch from an E63 6 Series in the F12/F13 generation (2011 onwards)?

No — these are fundamentally different systems. The E63/E64 (2003–2010) uses a physical ignition barrel, while the F12/F13/F06 generation (2011–2018) uses a push-button start with no barrel-style ignition switch at all, so the parts are not interchangeable in any meaningful way. If you have the later generation, you will need to identify the correct start button or ELV module rather than an ignition switch barrel.

My 6 Series is a 2009 model — could there be any late-production changes to the ignition switch I need to be aware of?

The E63/E64 generation ran from 2003 to 2010 with a mid-cycle update around 2007, and it is possible that minor revisions to steering column or electrical components were made around that time. Whether a pre-2007 or post-2007 switch crosses that boundary without issue is something you should confirm with the breaker against your exact registration and VIN. Stating with certainty that they interchange is beyond what can be guaranteed here.
