Choosing the right used Vauxhall Astra track rod

Used track rods vary between vehicles - and whether you call it used, second hand or a replacement, matching the right one matters. These are the details breakers need to match the right part to your car - our request form asks them so you only hear from suppliers with the correct part:

Fitment questions

Does a track rod from an older Astra fit my newer one - will a Mk5 part fit a Mk6?

The Astra Mk5 (H, 2004–2010) and Mk6 (J, 2010–2015) are entirely different platforms, so their track rods are not interchangeable. Always match the part to the correct generation rather than just the Astra name. Confirm the exact year and generation with your breaker before ordering.

What years does the Astra Mk5 (H) track rod fit, and does the facelift model use the same part?

The Mk5 Astra H ran from 2004 to 2010 and received a facelift around 2007, but the facelift was largely cosmetic and the steering geometry remained the same platform. In most cases the track rod is shared across the pre- and post-facelift Mk5, but because mid-generation running-gear changes can occur, we'd recommend you confirm against your registration with the breaker to be certain.

Will a track rod from a 1.2 Astra fit my 1.6 - does engine size matter?

For the Astra, track rod fitment is primarily determined by the generation rather than engine size, as the steering rack setup is generally common across the petrol engine range within the same platform. Engine size matters more for brakes and some suspension components than for the track rod specifically, so a 1.2 and 1.6 from the same generation will typically share this part. Confirm with your breaker against your registration to be sure.

Does it matter whether I buy a track rod from an SRi or a Design trim Astra?

Trim level does not affect track rod fitment on the Astra - the steering geometry is the same regardless of whether the donor car was a Design, SRi, Elite or any other trim. The track rod itself will be identical, so you don't need to limit your search to a specific trim. Just make sure the generation and any side (nearside or offside) matches your car.

Do I need to specify nearside or offside when buying a used Astra track rod?

Yes - track rods are side-specific, so you need to tell the breaker whether you need the nearside (NS, left-hand side as you sit in the car) or offside (OS, right-hand side) part. Getting the wrong side is a common and easily avoided mistake, so double-check which track rod end is worn before contacting breakers.

Does the Astra have a track rod - I've seen some cars don't have them?

Yes, the Vauxhall Astra is a front-wheel-drive car with a rack-and-pinion steering system, so it does have conventional track rods (also called track rod ends) connecting the steering rack to the front hub assemblies. All mainstream Astra generations from the Mk4 (G) onward share this layout, so track rods are a standard and readily available part from UK breakers.
