Does the Ford Ka have a lambda sensor at all?

Yes – petrol-engined Ford Kas are fitted with at least one lambda (oxygen) sensor in the exhaust system, which the engine management uses to regulate the fuel mixture and keep emissions within legal limits. The Ka was sold in the UK in two main generations: the original Mk1 (1996–2008) and the Fiat-based Mk2 (2008–2016), and both generations carried petrol engines with lambda sensors as standard. There was no diesel Ford Ka sold in the UK, so every Ka on UK roads will have had a lambda sensor fitted from the factory.

Will a lambda sensor from a 2004 Ka fit my 2007 Ka?

Both years sit within the Mk1 generation (1996–2008), which used the 1.3-litre Duratec or the earlier 1.3 Endura-E engine, and fitment is primarily determined by which engine code your car has rather than the model year alone. A sensor from the same engine family should be a strong candidate, but you should confirm the exact engine code with the breaker against your registration before buying, as connector type and sensor position can vary between the Duratec and the older Endura-E. Never assume a sensor is correct on year alone.

Does a lambda sensor from a Mk1 Ka (pre-2008) fit a Mk2 Ka (2008 onwards)?

Almost certainly not – the Mk2 Ka (2008–2016) is a completely different car underneath, based on Fiat 500 architecture with a different engine family (1.2-litre Duratec), a different exhaust system design, and a different engine management system compared to the Mk1. The two generations do not share exhaust or sensor components, so a Mk1 sensor is very unlikely to physically or electrically match a Mk2 application. Always quote your registration and confirm the engine code with the breaker when sourcing a Mk2 part.

Does trim level affect which lambda sensor I need – for example, does a Ka Studio need a different sensor to a Ka Zetec or Ka+ Active?

Trim level makes no difference to lambda sensor fitment on the Ford Ka – the sensor is determined by the engine code and the emissions specification of the car, not by whether it is a Studio, Zetec, Grand Prix, or any other trim. The Ka+ (the facelifted Mk2 sold from around 2016) retained the same 1.2-litre engine family, so the sensor requirement follows the engine, not the badge. You can safely ignore trim when searching, but do confirm the engine code and registration with the breaker.

My Ka is a 2012 – will any Mk2 Ka lambda sensor fit it?

A 2012 Ka sits mid-way through the Mk2 generation (2008–2016) and should use the 1.2-litre Duratec petrol engine, so a sensor from another Mk2 Ka with the same engine code is a reasonable starting point. However, sensors can differ depending on whether the car meets Euro 4 or Euro 5 emissions standards, as the emissions era affects sensor specification and calibration, and fitting the wrong-era sensor could affect how the car runs or whether it passes MOT. Always give the breaker your registration so they can verify the engine code and emissions spec before supplying the part.

How many lambda sensors does a Ford Ka have, and does it matter which one I order?

Most Ford Kas have a single lambda sensor positioned before the catalytic converter (the pre-cat or upstream sensor), though some later Mk2 models may also have a downstream sensor after the cat to monitor converter efficiency – the exact number depends on the engine management system fitted to your specific car. Getting the position right (upstream or downstream) is important because the sensors have different operating characteristics and are not interchangeable with each other. Check your existing sensor's location and confirm with the breaker which position you need before ordering.
