Fitment questions

Does the BMW M2 have a transfer box?

No – the BMW M2 is a rear-wheel-drive-only car across all generations (F87, 2016–2021; G87, 2023–present), so it has never been fitted with a transfer box, which is a component found only on four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive vehicles. If you are looking for a drivetrain component, you may actually need a differential, propshaft, or gearbox instead. Double-check your V5 or run a VIN check to confirm the exact model and drivetrain before searching further.

I searched for a transfer box for my M2 – what part do I actually need?

Because the M2 is strictly rear-wheel-drive, there is no transfer box in the drivetrain at all. Common parts customers sometimes confuse with a transfer box include the rear differential, the propshaft (driveshaft running rearward from the gearbox), or the gearbox output housing. Describing your symptoms or the failed component to a breaker will help them identify the correct part against your registration.

Could an M2 Competition or CS have a transfer box that the standard M2 does not?

No – the Competition and CS are performance variants of the same rear-wheel-drive platform, not four-wheel-drive derivatives, so none of them carry a transfer box regardless of trim level. Trim level makes no difference here because this is a question of fundamental drivetrain layout rather than specification. If you need a drivetrain part, supply your engine code (S55 for F87, S58 for G87) to the breaker so they can match the correct component.

Does the newer G87 M2 (2023-on) have a transfer box unlike the older F87?

No – the G87 M2 launched in 2023 retains rear-wheel drive just like the F87 (2016–2021), so neither generation has ever been equipped with a transfer box. The two generations do differ significantly in engine (S55 vs S58) and gearbox options, which matters a great deal if you are sourcing a gearbox or differential. A breaker will need your registration or VIN to supply the correct part for your specific generation.

A breaker is listing a transfer box said to fit an M2 – should I buy it?

This listing is almost certainly either mislabelled or intended for a different BMW model that does offer four-wheel drive, such as the X3 M or M5 xDrive. The M2 has no transfer box in its drivetrain, so such a part would have no application on your car. Contact the breaker directly and provide your registration number to ensure any part supplied is genuinely compatible with your vehicle.
