Fitment questions

Do BMW i5 glow plugs exist – does the i5 have a diesel engine?

No. The BMW i5 (G60, launched 2023) is a fully electric vehicle – it has no internal combustion engine of any kind, so glow plugs are not fitted to any variant of the i5. Glow plugs are a diesel-engine component used to pre-heat the combustion chamber, and because the i5 has no combustion engine, there is simply no application for them on this car.

I've been quoted glow plugs for my BMW i5 – could the parts seller be confusing it with another BMW?

Almost certainly, yes. The i5 shares its G60 platform with the petrol-engined BMW 5 Series (G60), and there are also diesel 5 Series variants (520d, 530d) that do use glow plugs. If you own a 5 Series with a diesel engine rather than the electric i5, glow plugs are the correct part – but if your car is genuinely a BMW i5, no glow plugs were ever fitted.

Could any trim or variant of the BMW i5 have glow plugs – for example the M60 xDrive version?

No variant of the i5 has glow plugs. The range includes the eDrive40, xDrive40, and M60 xDrive, all of which are purely battery-electric and have no diesel or petrol combustion engine. Because glow plugs only serve diesel engines, they have no place on any i5 regardless of power output or drivetrain configuration.

What part should I actually be looking for if my BMW i5 has a starting or cold-weather problem?

For a BMW i5, cold-weather or starting issues would point toward high-voltage battery health, the 12V auxiliary battery, charging system components, or thermal management parts rather than anything combustion-related. We'd recommend getting a diagnostic read from a BMW-specialist breaker or workshop, as the correct part will depend entirely on the fault code stored – and a breaker experienced with EV components will be best placed to advise.
