Buying a used BMW 4 Series camshaft: what matters

Fitment on a used camshaft varies by vehicle, so a bit of detail goes a long way. Our request form covers what breakers need to know, so every quote you get back is for the correct part:

Fitment questions

Does a BMW 4 Series have a camshaft?

Yes, every BMW 4 Series engine has camshafts — all variants use piston engines (petrol or diesel), and all piston engines require camshafts to operate the intake and exhaust valves. Most 4 Series engines use a double overhead camshaft (DOHC) arrangement, meaning there are separate intake and exhaust camshafts per cylinder bank, so make sure you and your breaker are clear on which one you need.

Will a camshaft from a 2014 4 Series fit my 2017 4 Series?

The F32-generation BMW 4 Series ran from 2013 to 2020, with a facelift in 2017, so a 2014 and a 2017 car sit either side of that facelift boundary. The engine codes can overlap across that boundary — for example the N20 and N47 family engines appeared both pre- and post-facelift — but ancillary and mounting details can change mid-production, so confirm compatibility with the breaker using both registration numbers rather than assuming the generation alone guarantees a match.

Does the engine code matter when buying a used 4 Series camshaft, or is the year enough?

The engine code matters above everything else when sourcing a camshaft — two 4 Series cars from the same year can have completely different engines depending on whether they are petrol or diesel, turbocharged or not, and what displacement they are. You'll find the engine code on your V5C or via a VIN check, and giving that code to your breaker is the single most useful thing you can do to avoid getting the wrong part.

Does it matter whether my 4 Series is a coupe, convertible, or Gran Coupe when buying a camshaft?

No — body style makes no difference whatsoever to camshaft fitment, because the camshaft is determined entirely by the engine fitted to the car. A 420d coupe and a 420d Gran Coupe with matching engine codes use the same camshaft, so don't worry about specifying the body style when talking to a breaker.

Does the trim level — for example Sport, M Sport, or xDrive — affect which camshaft I need?

Trim level and badge alone do not affect camshaft fitment — an M Sport is not a different engine specification from a Sport of the same model and engine code. The exception to watch is xDrive, which denotes four-wheel drive and can sometimes indicate a different engine variant, but the engine code still takes priority; confirm with your breaker using the engine code rather than relying on the trim name.

I have a G22 4 Series — will camshafts from the older F32 generation fit?

Almost certainly not without verification — the G22 generation launched in 2021 and uses a different engine family from the F32 (2013–2020), including the B46, B47, and S58 units, which differ internally from the N-series engines used in the F32. Camshafts are engine-specific components machined to precise tolerances, so cross-generation fitment is unlikely; supply your engine code to the breaker and let them confirm against the donor vehicle's code before ordering.
