Fitment questions

Will BMW 1 Series brakes from an E81/E82/E87/E88 fit my E81/E82/E87/E88?

The first-generation BMW 1 Series ran from 2004 to 2013 under the E8x family (E87 hatchback, E81 three-door, E88 convertible, E82 coupe), and brakes within this generation are often interchangeable, but engine size matters — larger-engined models such as the 130i were fitted with bigger brake discs and calipers than smaller-engined variants like the 116i. Always confirm the exact disc diameter and caliper type with the breaker against your registration before buying.

Will E87 1 Series brakes fit the F20/F21 second-generation 1 Series?

The first-generation E8x (2004–2013) and the second-generation F20/F21 (2011–2019, with a facelift in 2015) are entirely different platforms, so brakes do not cross over between these generations. Route any query about parts spanning that E8x-to-F20 boundary straight to the breaker with both registrations to hand, as the hub, caliper, and disc dimensions are not compatible.

Does the facelift F20 1 Series (2015 onwards) use the same brakes as the pre-facelift F20?

The F20/F21 received a facelift in 2015, and while many running-gear components carried over, whether the brakes on a pre-facelift (2011–2015) car match a post-facelift (2015–2019) car depends on the specific engine variant — larger engines may have differing brake specs on either side of that boundary. Confirm this directly with the breaker against both registrations rather than assuming the facelift year is a clean cutover.

Do trim levels like SE, Sport, M Sport, or M140i affect which brakes I need for my BMW 1 Series?

Trim level alone — SE, Sport, or M Sport — does not change brake fitment on the BMW 1 Series; what matters is the generation (E8x or F20/F21) and the engine size. The M140i and other high-performance variants are a different matter, as they can carry uprated brake hardware, so if your car or the donor car is a performance model confirm the caliper and disc specification with the breaker. You may also find cosmetic differences such as caliper colour between standard and performance-spec parts, but these do not affect function.

Does a 118d share the same brakes as a 120d on the same generation 1 Series?

Engine size influences brake specification on the BMW 1 Series, so a 118d and a 120d within the same generation do not automatically share identical brakes — the higher-output 120d may run larger discs or different calipers front or rear. Check the disc diameter and caliper part numbers with the breaker, quoting both registrations, to be sure the donor car's brakes match your vehicle.

I need a front brake disc for my 1 Series — does it matter whether I get a NS or OS part?

Brake discs on the BMW 1 Series are generally the same component on both the nearside (NS) and offside (OS), so side typically does not matter for discs alone. However, if you are sourcing calipers or caliper carriers, these are side-specific, so always tell the breaker clearly which side you need — NS (left, kerb side) or OS (right, driver's side) in UK terms — to avoid getting the wrong part.
