Used Volkswagen Touran Propshaft

The vast majority of Volkswagen Touran models sold in the UK are front-wheel drive, which means they do not have a propshaft at all. A small number of Tourans were available with 4Motion four-wheel drive, and those versions do have a propshaft to drive the rear axle. If your Touran is front-wheel drive, the part you may actually be looking for is a driveshaft, which transfers power from the gearbox to the front wheels.

The easiest way to check is to look under the car — if there is a rotating shaft running from the front of the car back towards the rear axle, your Touran has a propshaft and is a 4Motion four-wheel-drive model. You can also check your V5C registration document or the sticker inside the driver's door jamb, which should confirm the drivetrain. If you are still unsure, any breaker will be able to check against your registration plate before supplying a part.

The Touran ran across two main generations — the first generation from 2003 to 2010 and the second generation from 2010 onwards, with a third generation arriving around 2015. These generations are built on different platforms and have different dimensions, so it is very unlikely a propshaft from a first-generation 4Motion model would fit a later-generation car. Always confirm fitment against your exact registration with the breaker before purchasing.

On four-wheel-drive vehicles like the 4Motion Touran, the propshaft specification can vary depending on the power output of the engine, as higher-torque units sometimes require a more heavy-duty shaft. It is worth telling the breaker both your registration and your exact engine code so they can match the correct part. Never assume a propshaft from a lower-powered 4Motion Touran will be a direct swap onto a higher-powered variant without checking.

Trim level — whether SE, Sport, Highline, or any other — does not determine which propshaft a Touran has; what matters is whether the car is a 4Motion four-wheel-drive model or not. If two Tourans share the same generation, engine, and 4Motion drivetrain, the propshaft should be the same regardless of trim. Be aware that other parts you can see at the same time, such as interior fittings, may differ between trims, but that has no bearing on the propshaft itself.

If your Touran is front-wheel drive, it does not have a propshaft, so the noise is coming from something else. The most likely causes of a clunking or vibrating noise on a front-wheel-drive Touran are worn driveshafts, CV joints, or front suspension components.
