Fitment questions
Does the Mercedes-Benz GLS actually have a handbrake lever?
No — the Mercedes-Benz GLS (sold in the UK from 2016 onwards across both the X166 generation and the current X167 from 2019) uses an electronic parking brake operated by a button or switch on the centre console, not a traditional pull-up handbrake lever. No variant of the GLS, regardless of engine or trim, was ever fitted with a mechanical handbrake lever, so this part simply does not exist on this model.
I need to fix my GLS parking brake — what part should I actually be looking for?
If your electronic parking brake is faulty, the parts you are most likely to need are the electronic parking brake switch (the button on the centre console), the EPB actuator motors fitted to the rear calipers, or the EPB control module — not a handbrake lever. Describe the fault to a breaker and give them your registration so they can identify the correct component for your specific GLS.
Could a handbrake lever from a Mercedes-Benz ML or GL fit my GLS?
The ML and GL used a more conventional handbrake setup in earlier generations, but this would not be a compatible or appropriate replacement for the GLS's electronic parking brake system, which is an entirely different mechanism. If you are sourcing a parking-brake-related part, speak to a breaker with your full registration and explain exactly what has failed so they can match the correct electronic component.
A breaker has listed a 'handbrake' part for a GLS — should I buy it?
It is worth querying exactly what the part is before purchasing, as it may be the EPB switch, an actuator, or a cable for a different model that has been mislabelled. Ask the breaker to confirm the part number and the registration of the donor vehicle so you can be sure it matches your GLS generation (X166 pre-2019 or X167 2019-onwards), as these are not interchangeable.
