A buyer's guide to used Mercedes-Benz C-Class cylinder head

No two cylinder heads are quite the same across different vehicles, so getting the specifics right matters when you buy used, second hand or a replacement. Answer a few quick questions below and breakers will only quote if they have the exact matching part in stock:

Fitment questions

Will a cylinder head from a 2005 C-Class fit my 2003 C-Class?

Both years fall within the W203 generation (2000–2007), so there is a reasonable chance of compatibility, but fitment depends far more on the engine code than the year alone – a C220 CDI head will not suit a C180 Kompressor even if the cars are the same age. Pull the engine code from your V5 or a VIN check and give it to the breaker, as mid-production ancillary and mounting changes can catch buyers out. Never assume fitment without the breaker confirming against your exact registration.

Does a cylinder head from a W204 C-Class fit a W205?

The W204 ran from 2007 to 2014 (facelift 2011) and the W205 from 2014 onwards, so these are entirely separate generations with different engine families – a head from one will not simply cross to the other. Engine architecture, bolt patterns and coolant routing changed significantly between generations. Always quote your engine code to the breaker rather than the chassis generation alone.

I have a 2012 C-Class – will a pre-facelift W204 head fit it?

The W204 facelifted in 2011, so a 2012 car is a post-facelift model, while pre-facelift cars ran from 2007 to 2011. The engine codes used across the W204 generation can overlap the facelift boundary, which gives some hope for interchange, but confirm with the breaker against your registration as ancillary and mounting details may have changed at the facelift. Your engine code – not the facelift date – is the critical detail to supply.

Does it matter whether I buy a cylinder head from an Estate or a Saloon C-Class?

No – body style has no effect on cylinder head fitment whatsoever, as the head is determined entirely by the engine fitted to the car. A head from a W205 Estate with a 651 engine code is mechanically identical to one from a W205 Saloon carrying the same code. Focus on matching the engine code, fuel type and gearbox type, and ignore the body style of the donor car.

Does the trim level affect which cylinder head I need – for example, will a head from an AMG Line fit my SE?

Trim levels such as SE, Sport, AMG Line and AMG Line Premium are specification packages that affect interior, wheels and cosmetic features – they have no bearing on which cylinder head is fitted. What matters is the engine code, which is the same across trim levels for any given engine variant. Expect no mechanical difference; just confirm the engine code matches and let the breaker check availability against your registration.

Does it matter if the donor car had a manual gearbox and mine is an automatic?

Gearbox type does not directly determine the cylinder head specification, but it can indicate differences in engine tune or ancillary setup that were occasionally applied to the same engine code in different states of tune. For most mainstream C-Class engines the head itself will be the same regardless of gearbox, but confirm with the breaker against both engine codes and registrations before buying, as coding or sensor differences can sometimes apply.
