Lambda sensors exist on petrol-engined Ford Focus models across all generations, where they monitor exhaust gases to help the ECU manage fuel trim — you'll typically find at least one upstream (pre-cat) and one downstream (post-cat) sensor on petrol variants. Diesel Focus models do not use lambda sensors in the same way; diesels rely on different sensors such as NOx sensors or air-mass meters, so if your Focus is diesel, a lambda sensor is not the part you need. If you're unsure which you have, check your V5C or registration on a data checker before requesting quotes.

The Mk2 Focus ran from 2004 to 2011 and the Mk3 from 2011 to 2018, and while some petrol engine codes carried across that boundary — for example the 1.6 Ti-VCT — the emissions calibration and sensor specification can differ between Euro 4 and Euro 5 eras, which straddle that changeover. Using a sensor from the wrong emissions era may cause incorrect fuelling, a warning light, or an MOT failure, so a visual match alone is not enough. Confirm with the breaker that the part number or engine code matches your specific registration before buying.

Trim level — whether it's a Zetec, Titanium, ST, or any other — makes no difference to lambda sensor fitment on the Ford Focus; what matters is the engine code, fuel type (petrol), and the emissions era the car was built to. The ST uses a different engine (the 2.0 EcoBoost or older 2.5 five-cylinder depending on generation) so its sensor specification will differ from a 1.6 Ti-VCT Titanium, but that's driven by the engine, not the ST badge itself. Quote your engine code and registration to the breaker and they'll identify the correct unit regardless of trim.

The Mk3 Focus was facelifted in 2014, and while the facelift was primarily cosmetic, some engine variants were updated around the same period to meet tightening emissions standards, which can affect sensor specification and calibration. If the donor car shares the same engine code and was built to the same emissions standard as yours, there's a reasonable chance of compatibility, but crossing the facelift boundary is strong confirm-with-the-breaker territory. Give the breaker both registrations and ask them to verify the part number matches before committing.

Most petrol Ford Focus models have two lambda sensors per exhaust bank — one upstream of the catalytic converter (sometimes called the pre-cat or front sensor) and one downstream (post-cat or rear sensor), and these are not interchangeable with each other as they serve different functions and often have different part numbers. On a standard four-cylinder Focus with a single exhaust bank you'll have two sensors in total; if a fault code has directed you to a specific sensor, make sure you tell the breaker whether you need the upstream or downstream unit. Mixing them up won't cause immediate damage but will result in incorrect readings and a likely engine warning light.

Euro 6 became mandatory for new registrations in the UK from September 2015, and Focus models built to Euro 6 can have updated sensor specifications or additional sensors compared to their Euro 5 predecessors, particularly on engines that were revised to meet the stricter limits. Using a Euro 5 sensor on a Euro 6 car, or vice versa, risks incorrect fuelling feedback and potential emissions-related MOT issues. Always confirm with the breaker that the donor vehicle's registration and engine code align with yours, especially if your car sits close to the 2015 boundary.
