Fitment questions

What years does a BMW Z4 headlight fit – how are the generations split?

The BMW Z4 comes in two main generations: the E85/E86 (2003–2009) and the G29 (2019–present), with no direct overlap between them, so headlights are not interchangeable across those two generations. The E85/E86 received a facelift around 2006, and the G29 received a facelift around 2022, meaning the front-end lighting changed at those points within each generation. Always quote your registration to the breaker so they can confirm exactly which pre- or post-facelift headlight your car needs.

Will a 2005 BMW Z4 headlight fit a 2008 Z4?

These two cars sit either side of the E85/E86 facelift, which occurred around 2006, so the front-end styling – including the headlights – changed at that point. The 2005 car is pre-facelift and the 2008 car is post-facelift, which means you should not assume they will swap straight over. Confirm with the breaker against both registrations before purchasing, as they will be able to check whether the specific unit will interchange.

Does trim level affect which headlight a BMW Z4 needs – does an SE, Sport or M Sport use a different light?

Trim level does not affect headlight fitment on the Z4 – the front-end panels are shared across SE, Sport, M Sport and other trim grades within the same generation and facelift period. That said, you may find cosmetic differences such as different interior lighting colours or indicator surrounds depending on the specification the breaker's donor car was built to. Confirm with the breaker whether their unit matches your existing setup, particularly if your car has xenon or LED headlights rather than halogen.

Do I need to tell the breaker if my Z4 has xenon or halogen headlights?

Yes – within the same generation and facelift period, xenon (HID) and halogen headlight units are physically different and are not directly interchangeable. This is something you must confirm with the breaker against your registration, as the correct variant depends on how your car was originally specified rather than just the model year. Letting the breaker know upfront will save time and help them pull the right unit from the donor car.

Will a G29 Z4 headlight from a 2019 fit a 2023 car?

The G29 generation runs from 2019 onwards, but the model received a facelift around 2022 which brought changes to the front-end styling including the headlights. A 2019 unit and a 2023 unit therefore sit on opposite sides of that facelift boundary, and you should not assume they are the same part. Confirm with the breaker against your registration whether the specific unit from their donor car is a match for your post-facelift car.

Can I use a headlight from a Z4 roadster on a Z4 coupé from the same year?

Within the E85/E86 generation, the roadster (E85) and coupé (E86) shared the same front-end structure, and headlights were common across both body styles. Provided the donor car is from the same facelift period as yours – pre- or post-2006 – the body style itself should not be a barrier to fitment. Confirm the full specification with the breaker against your registration to be sure, particularly regarding lighting technology such as halogen versus xenon.
