Fitment questions

Does the BMW i3 have a roof rack?

The BMW i3 does not have a factory-fitted roof rack, and BMW does not recommend or support roof rack use on it. The i3's carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell has no integrated roof rails or fixing points, and the roof structure is not designed to carry roof rack loads. If you need to carry extra luggage, a towbar-mounted carrier or the BMW i3 accessory tow bar (where fitted) is the route most owners take instead.

Can I buy a used BMW i3 roof rack from a breaker?

You are unlikely to find a genuine BMW i3 roof rack at a breaker because the part was never fitted to the i3 from the factory and does not exist in the BMW parts catalogue for this model. Some aftermarket brands have marketed low-load solutions for the i3, but these are not standard vehicle parts that would be removed from a scrapped car. A breaker is therefore not the right source for this — an aftermarket accessories retailer would be the correct starting point, and even then you should check maximum load ratings carefully given the i3's CFRP roof.

Will a roof rack from a BMW 1 Series fit an i3?

No — the BMW i3 and BMW 1 Series have completely different roof structures, and the i3 has no roof-rail fixing points at all, so a 1 Series roof rack cannot be adapted to fit it. The i3 is built on a unique Life Drive architecture with a CFRP upper structure that shares nothing with the steel-bodied 1 Series. These are fundamentally incompatible platforms for this type of accessory.

Does it matter whether my i3 is a 60Ah, 94Ah, or 120Ah battery version when looking for roof-mounting accessories?

Battery variant makes no difference here, because the issue is the same across all versions of the i3: the CFRP roof has no fixing points for a roof rack regardless of which battery pack the car has. Engine or battery configuration is not a fitment factor for external body accessories in any case — the problem is structural and applies to every i3 built. Focus your search on towbar-mounted or boot-lid-mounted carrying solutions instead.

My i3 is a Rex (range extender) model — does that change whether a roof rack is available?

No — the Rex range extender engine fitted under the rear floor does not affect the roof structure in any way, and the i3 Rex shares the same CFRP roof and lack of fixing points as the pure-electric version. There is no roof rack available for either variant. A towbar or rear-mounted carrier remains the practical alternative if you need extra load-carrying capacity.
