Fitment questions

What generation is my BMW 3 Series and does it affect which headlight I need?

The BMW 3 Series has run through several distinct generations: E36 (1990–2000), E46 (1998–2006), E90/E91/E92/E93 (2005–2013), F30/F31/F34 (2012–2019), and G20 (2019–present). Each generation has its own headlight design and the units are not interchangeable between generations, so identifying yours correctly is the essential first step. Give the breaker your registration and they can confirm the exact generation before supplying a part.

Will a headlight from a 2008 BMW 3 Series fit my 2012 car?

The E90-generation 3 Series ran from 2005 to 2013, and it received a facelift in 2008 that changed the headlight design, so a pre-facelift (2005–2007) unit and a post-facelift (2008–2013) unit are different items. A 2008 and a 2012 car are both post-facelift E90s, so they sit within the same facelift period and a match is much more likely. That said, confirm the exact part against your registration with the breaker before purchasing, as build-date cut-offs don't always fall neatly on calendar years.

Does it matter whether my 3 Series is a saloon, estate or coupe when buying a headlight?

No — within the same generation and facelift period, the front-end pressing and headlight units are shared across body styles, so a saloon (E90), estate (E91), coupe (E92) or convertible (E93) all use the same headlight assembly. You do not need to specify body style when asking a breaker for a headlight, but do tell them your generation, facelift status and which side you need (NS for nearside/passenger, OS for offside/driver).

Does my trim level — SE, Sport, M Sport or xDrive — change which headlight I need?

Trim level does not affect the physical headlight housing or its fitment on the BMW 3 Series — an SE, Sport, M Sport and xDrive model within the same generation and facelift period all use the same mounting points and unit shape. However, higher trims or optional packs may have been fitted with xenon or later LED adaptive units rather than standard halogen, so the bulb technology and internal components can differ even though the outer housing looks identical. Confirm with the breaker whether the unit they have matches your existing setup — halogen versus xenon/LED — by checking against your registration.

I have a 2014 BMW 3 Series F30 — is that pre-facelift or post-facelift?

The F30/F31 3 Series (2012–2019) received a facelift in 2015, which brought revised headlight internals and updated LED daytime running light signatures. A 2014 car is therefore pre-facelift, and you should look for a pre-facelift F30 headlight to match it. If a breaker is offering a post-2015 unit, confirm with them directly whether it will interchange with your pre-facelift car, as crossing the facelift boundary is the key risk here.

Can I fit a headlight from a different side of the car — e.g. use an OS unit on the NS?

No — headlights are handed, meaning the nearside (NS, passenger side, UK left) and offside (OS, driver side, UK right) units are mirror images of each other and cannot be swapped. Always specify NS or OS clearly when requesting a quote from a breaker, and double-check the side on any unit before it is dispatched to avoid a wasted return.

Fitment guidance is general and mistakes can happen - vehicle specifications vary and manufacturers make mid-production changes. Always confirm the exact part against your registration with the supplying breaker before buying.
