Fitment questions

What years does the Volkswagen Touran rear light fit across – are there different generations to be aware of?

The Touran has two main generations: the Mk1 (2003–2015) and the Mk2 (2015 onwards), and rear lights are not interchangeable between these two generations as they sit on completely different platforms with different body pressings. Within the Mk1, there was a facelift in 2010 which revised the rear light units, so a pre-facelift light (2003–2010) will not simply swap onto a post-facelift car (2010–2015). Always confirm the exact year of your car with the breaker so they can match from the correct phase.

Will a rear light from a 2009 Touran fit my 2012 Touran?

These two years sit either side of the Mk1 facelift in 2010, which changed the rear light design, so in most cases a 2009 unit will not correctly fit a 2012 car. Both are Mk1 Tourans, but the facelift introduced revised clusters with different shapes and fixings. Confirm the exact pre- or post-facelift status of both vehicles with the breaker before buying.

Does the engine or trim level affect which rear light I need for my Touran?

No – engine choice has no bearing on rear light fitment whatsoever, so whether your Touran is a diesel or petrol makes no difference. Trim level (for example S, SE, or SEL) does not change the rear light unit itself, though higher trims may have had LED clusters where lower trims had conventional bulb clusters, so there may be a cosmetic or wiring difference to be aware of. The breaker can tell you whether the unit from their vehicle matches your specification once you confirm your registration.

Is there a difference between the driver's side and passenger's side rear light on a Touran?

Yes – the nearside (NS, passenger side) and offside (OS, driver's side) rear lights are handed and are not interchangeable with each other. Always tell the breaker clearly which side you need, using NS or OS, to avoid being sent the wrong unit. The Touran is a five-door MPV, so there is no variation in door count to complicate the fitment picture here.

Will a Mk2 Touran rear light (2015 onwards) fit an earlier Mk1 Touran?

No – the Mk1 (2003–2015) and Mk2 (2015 onwards) are on different platforms with entirely different body structures, so the rear light assemblies are not compatible with each other. If someone is selling a 'Touran rear light' without specifying the generation, make sure you establish which one it is before purchasing. Give the breaker your registration number so they can pull the correct part for your generation and facelift phase.

I've found a rear light described as fitting a 2016 Touran – will it fit my 2018 Touran?

Both 2016 and 2018 fall within the Mk2 generation (2015 onwards), so there is a reasonable chance they share the same rear light, but you should confirm with the breaker that there were no mid-generation pressing or specification changes between those years that might affect fitment. Engine and trim level differences between the two cars will not matter for the light itself. Always verify against your exact registration rather than relying on year alone.
