What to check when buying a used Vauxhall Cavalier propshaft

A used propshaft that fits one vehicle won't always fit another - even within the same model range. These questions help breakers match stock to your exact vehicle before they quote:

Fitment questions

Does the Vauxhall Cavalier have a propshaft?

The vast majority of Cavaliers sold in the UK were front-wheel-drive, and front-wheel-drive cars do not have a propshaft — drive goes directly to the front wheels via driveshafts instead. If you are hunting for a driveshaft (the shaft that runs from the gearbox to an individual front wheel), that is the part you actually need, and breakers will have those listed separately for the NS (nearside, left) and OS (offside, right).

I've been told my Cavalier needs a propshaft — could that be right?

It is extremely unlikely unless you have a very rare 4x4 variant, as almost every Cavalier on UK roads was front-wheel-drive with no propshaft whatsoever. It is possible the garage or part supplier has used the term loosely to mean a driveshaft, which is the correct part for a front-wheel-drive Cavalier. Double-check what is actually worn or damaged — if it is the shaft running to one of the front wheels, you need a driveshaft, not a propshaft.

Will a Cavalier Mk3 driveshaft fit a Mk2 — what are the generation differences?

The Cavalier ran across three main UK generations: Mk1 (1975–1981, rear-wheel-drive), Mk2 (1981–1988), and Mk3 (1988–1995). The Mk1 is the only generation that was rear-wheel-drive and therefore the only one that genuinely carried a propshaft, while the Mk2 and Mk3 were front-wheel-drive and use driveshafts instead. Driveshaft interchangeability across the Mk2/Mk3 boundary depends on engine size and gearbox, so confirm the exact match with the breaker against your registration.

Does engine size affect which driveshaft I need for a Cavalier?

Yes — different engine variants used different gearboxes and sometimes different driveshaft lengths or spline counts, so a 1.4 or 1.6 unit may not share the same driveshaft as a 2.0 or the 2.5 V6 found in later Mk3 models. Always give the breaker your full registration or engine code so they can match the correct shaft rather than going on engine size alone.

Does the trim level — such as L, GL, GLS, SRi, or GSi — affect which driveshaft fits my Cavalier?

Trim level itself does not determine driveshaft fitment — what matters is the engine and gearbox combination under the bonnet, which can vary across trims. A Cavalier SRi and a GL with the same 2.0 engine will generally use the same driveshaft, but always confirm with the breaker because higher-performance trims like the GSi sometimes had different gearbox internals. Colour and interior specification make no difference at all to running-gear compatibility.

Could my Cavalier Mk1 actually need a propshaft?

Yes — if you have a genuine Mk1 Cavalier from the 1975–1981 run, it was rear-wheel-drive and did have a propshaft, making it the only UK Cavalier generation where a propshaft search is legitimate. These are now very old vehicles and breaker stock will be scarce, so contact dismantlers directly and be prepared to provide full vehicle details to help them identify the correct unit. For any Cavalier made after 1981, a propshaft does not apply and you should be looking at driveshafts instead.
