Fitment questions

Do Mercedes-Benz SLK glow plugs exist – does the SLK even have them?

Glow plugs only exist on diesel engines, and the Mercedes-Benz SLK was never offered with a diesel engine in any generation – it was exclusively petrol-powered throughout its production run (R170 1996–2004, R171 2004–2011, R172 2011–2016). That means no SLK of any year, trim or engine size ever left the factory with glow plugs fitted. If your SLK has a cold-start or misfiring issue, you are most likely looking for ignition components instead – spark plugs, ignition coils, or HT leads depending on your engine.

I've been quoted glow plugs for my SLK – could the seller have the wrong part?

Almost certainly yes – the SLK has never had a diesel engine, so glow plugs simply do not apply to this vehicle. A reputable breaker or parts supplier should be able to correct this quickly once you confirm the fuel type. What you most likely need are spark plugs or ignition coils, so share your exact engine code (found on your V5C or via a VIN check) to make sure you're quoted the right ignition parts.

What ignition parts should I actually be looking for on my Mercedes-Benz SLK instead of glow plugs?

Because the SLK is petrol-only across all three generations, the cold-start and combustion components you need are spark plugs, ignition coils, and – on older R170 models – HT leads or a distributor cap depending on the specific engine. Your engine code is the single most useful detail here, as the correct spark plug type, coil pack configuration and gap specification vary between engines such as the M111, M272, M271 (supercharged), and AMG units. Supply your engine code to the breaker to ensure the right parts are quoted.

Does it matter which SLK trim I have – Kompressor, AMG Sport, Final Edition – when sourcing ignition parts?

Trim level does not determine which ignition parts you need – engine code does. An SLK 200 Kompressor and an SLK 200 Kompressor AMG Sport share the same engine and therefore the same spark plugs and coils; the trim differences are cosmetic or equipment-based, not mechanical. Always lead with your engine code rather than the trim name when asking a breaker for a quote.

Will ignition parts from an R171 SLK (2004–2011) fit my R172 SLK (2011–2016)?

The R171 and R172 are distinct generations with different engine families, so ignition parts do not automatically cross over even if the badge – for example SLK 200 – looks the same on both. Confirm the engine code from your V5C and check it against what the breaker has, as the safest way to establish compatibility across that 2011 generation boundary. Never assume fitment based on engine displacement or badge alone.
