That said, Mercedes did introduce software and hardware revisions across the X166's production run, and whether a specific unit from 2017 will plug straight into a 2019 car is something you should confirm with the breaker against your registration number.
The 2020 model year marks the changeover from the first-generation X166 to the second-generation X167, and these two generations use entirely different instrument cluster designs, connectors, and software architectures. Fitting a second-generation cluster into a first-generation GLS is not a straightforward swap and is very unlikely to be compatible. Stick to sourcing a cluster from within your own generation and confirm the exact part with your breaker.
The GLS was offered in trim levels including SE Line and AMG Line (among others depending on market year), and while interior styling does vary between trims, the core instrument cluster unit is largely driven by generation rather than trim. You may find minor display configuration differences depending on optional equipment fitted to the donor vehicle, so it is worth describing your trim level and any factory-fitted options to the breaker so they can match as closely as possible.
Engine choice — whether diesel, petrol, or hybrid — does not fundamentally determine instrument cluster fitment on the GLS, and you should focus on generation and build date rather than engine code when searching.
