Does a Mercedes CLK have a lambda sensor at all?

Yes – every petrol-engined CLK was fitted with lambda (oxygen) sensors as standard, because the engine management system relies on them to control fuel mixture and meet emissions requirements. Diesel CLK models do not use lambda sensors in the same way, so if your car is a diesel you are most likely looking for something else, such as a NOx sensor or EGR-related component. What are the CLK generations and does it matter which one my car is?

The Mercedes CLK ran across two main generations: the W208 (1997–2002) and the W209 (2002–2009), with the W209 receiving a facelift around 2005. Generation matters a great deal for lambda sensor fitment because the engine codes changed between the W208 and W209, and even within the W209 the pre-facelift and post-facelift cars can carry different engine variants. Always match the sensor to your specific engine code rather than just the model year.

Will a lambda sensor from a 2001 CLK fit my 2004 CLK?

A 2001 CLK is a W208 and a 2004 CLK is an early W209 – these are different generations with different engine families, so a direct swap is unlikely even if the connectors look similar. The sensor position, wiring plug type and thread pitch can all differ between the two platforms. Confirm the engine code on both vehicles with the breaker before buying to avoid an expensive mistake.

Does the trim level affect which lambda sensor I need – for example Elegance versus Avantgarde versus AMG?

No – trim level does not affect lambda sensor fitment on the CLK. Elegance, Avantgarde and AMG Sport trims can share the same sensor as long as the engine code is identical, because the sensor is determined by the engine and exhaust configuration, not by the interior or cosmetic specification. Bear in mind that a used sensor pulled from a different trim may look slightly different in terms of cable length or bracket, but what matters for compatibility is the engine code and sensor position (upstream or downstream of the catalytic converter).

Does it matter whether the sensor is the upstream or downstream one?

Yes, it matters – on most petrol CLK engines there are at least two lambda sensors per bank (pre-cat and post-cat), and they are not interchangeable with each other even though they may look similar. The upstream sensor reads live exhaust gas to control fuelling, while the downstream sensor monitors catalytic converter efficiency, and swapping them will trigger fault codes and potentially cause an MOT failure. Tell the breaker which position you need and confirm it against your engine code so they can supply the correct unit.

I have a W209 CLK 200 Kompressor – will a sensor from a W209 CLK 280 fit?

These two engines (the supercharged four-cylinder M271 and the naturally aspirated V6 M272) are completely different units, so the lambda sensors are very unlikely to be interchangeable despite both being W209 cars. The number of sensors, their connector type and their thread size can all differ between engine families. Match the part to your specific engine code – M271 for the 200 Kompressor – and ask the breaker to cross-reference that against what they are supplying.
