Fitment questions

What generation is my Ford Transit and does it affect which door handle I need?

The Transit has gone through several distinct generations: the Mk6 ran from 2000 to 2006, the Mk7 from 2006 to 2013, and the current Mk8 from 2014 onwards. Door handles are generation-specific, so a Mk6 handle will not fit a Mk8 and vice versa. Always quote your generation or registration to the breaker so they can pull the correct handle.

Will a door handle from a 2012 Transit fit my 2014 Transit?

This crosses a significant generation boundary: 2012 is Mk7 (2006–2013) and 2014 is Mk8 (2014 onwards), and the body redesign means the door handle mountings and profiles changed between these generations. A Mk7 handle is very unlikely to be a straight swap onto a Mk8 door. Confirm directly with the breaker quoting both registrations before purchasing.

Does it matter whether I need a nearside or offside door handle on my Transit?

Yes, this is one of the most important details to get right — NS (nearside, passenger side, left) and OS (offside, driver side, right) handles are handed and are not interchangeable. UK convention is that NS is the kerb side and OS is the road side. Always specify NS or OS clearly when requesting a quote from a breaker.

Do I need to specify wheelbase or sliding versus hinged when buying a Transit side door handle?

For vans, yes — the Transit's large sliding side door uses a completely different handle mechanism from a hinged door, and on longer wheelbases the sliding door itself can differ in size and fittings. If you're replacing a sliding side door handle, tell the breaker whether your Transit is short, medium, or long wheelbase as well as confirming the door type. Getting this wrong is a common and costly mistake, so be as specific as possible.

Does the trim level affect which door handle I need — for example, does a Transit Leader or Limited handle differ from a base model?

Trim level — whether Leader, Trend, Limited, or another grade — does not affect door handle fitment on the Transit; the structural door furniture is shared across the range for a given generation and door position. You may find cosmetic differences such as a chrome-effect or body-coloured finish on higher trim handles versus a plain black on base models, but these can be resprayed or swapped for appearance. What matters for fitment is generation, NS or OS, and door type (sliding or hinged), not the trim badge.

Does the engine or fuel type of the donor Transit matter when buying a second-hand door handle?

No — engine choice, fuel type, and gearbox have no bearing on door handle fitment whatsoever. Focus your search on matching the generation, the correct side (NS or OS), and whether you need a sliding or hinged door handle, and you can safely disregard what engine the breaker's Transit had.
