The 5 Series has run through several well-established generations: E39 (1996–2003), E60 (2004–2010), F10 (2010–2017), and G30 (2017–2024). Each generation has its own completely different front bumper, so getting the right generation is the single most important thing when searching. Tell your breaker your exact registration and they will confirm the generation straight away.

Both years fall within the F10 generation (2010–2017), but the F10 received a facelift in 2013 which brought changes to the front bumper, grille and lights. A 2014 bumper is from the post-facelift F10 and a 2012 bumper is pre-facelift, so they look noticeably different and are unlikely to be a straight swap. Confirm with the breaker against both registrations before buying, as whether any specific panels interchange across that 2013 boundary is something they can check on the parts system.

The E60 generation ran from 2004 to 2010 and received a facelift around 2007, after which the front bumper design changed alongside the headlights and grille. If your car is pre-facelift (2004–2007) and the donor bumper is post-facelift (2007–2010), or vice versa, the styling will not match and mounting points may differ. Name the 2007 facelift boundary to your breaker and ask them to verify interchange against your specific registration before committing.

Engine and trim level do not affect which front bumper fits in terms of the underlying generation and facelift period, but the M Sport trim on the 5 Series does use a visually distinct bumper with different lower aprons and air intake styling compared with SE or Sport. So a bumper from the same generation and facelift period will physically fit regardless of trim, but an SE bumper on an M Sport car (or the other way around) will look noticeably different. Make sure you tell your breaker whether your car has the M Sport bodykit so they can source a matching bumper.

Front bumpers are shared across body styles within a generation, so a bumper from a 5 Series Saloon and one from a Touring estate of the same generation and facelift period are the same part. The key variables remain generation and whether the car is pre- or post-facelift, not the body style. Your breaker will confirm this against your registration, but body style is not something you need to stress over when searching.

Ask the seller or breaker for the donor vehicle's registration number, which they can run to confirm the exact generation and whether it is pre- or post-facelift. For the 5 Series the critical boundaries are the generational changes (E39, E60, F10, G30) and the facelift points within each — crossing any of these boundaries is where fitment problems arise. Never assume a bumper fits based on price or a rough year alone; always have the breaker cross-reference both registrations before you buy.
