Is replacing a driveshaft a big job?

On most front-wheel-drive cars, the driveshaft (also called a CV axle or half-shaft) connects the gearbox to one of the front wheels. Replacing one is a routine job for an experienced garage, but a moderate-to-difficult repair for a home mechanic. A garage will often allow around one to three hours per side, though the time varies by vehicle. The work normally involves removing the wheel and hub nut, disconnecting part of the suspension or steering assembly, pulling the driveshaft from the wheel hub, releasing the inner end from the gearbox, and correctly tightening the replacement. It can take longer if the shaft is seized in the hub, bolts are corroded, or access is restricted - some vehicles need a specialist puller, a replacement hub nut, fresh gearbox oil, or a new oil seal.

What are the signs of a faulty driveshaft?

Common symptoms include clicking or knocking when turning, vibration or shuddering under acceleration, grease around the wheel or CV boot, a split or damaged CV boot, clunking when taking up drive, and excessive movement in a CV joint. These symptoms can also be caused by wheel bearings, engine mounts, suspension components, or gearbox problems, so the vehicle should be checked before ordering a replacement.

Can you replace a driveshaft yourself?

A competent home mechanic may manage it in half a day, provided the shaft and fasteners come apart without difficulty. Typical tools include a large hub-nut socket, a breaker bar or impact wrench, a torque wrench, a ball-joint separator, axle stands, and a pry bar or driveshaft removal tool. It is not usually a good first DIY repair: the hub nut is tightened to a high torque, the vehicle must be supported securely, and careless removal can damage the gearbox oil seal, wheel bearing, ABS wiring, or suspension components. Fasteners must be tightened to the manufacturer specifications.

New, reconditioned, or used driveshaft?

You generally have three options. A new aftermarket shaft is readily available for many vehicles, though quality varies among very low-cost parts. A reconditioned unit may have replacement CV joints, boots or bearings - check what work was done and what warranty is included. A used genuine driveshaft from a UK vehicle dismantler can be cost-effective, particularly where a new genuine part is expensive or hard to obtain, and may offer a better original fit than some cheap aftermarket alternatives. Because the labour is broadly the same whichever shaft you fit, it makes sense to compare part price, condition, and warranty before buying.

Driveshafts are vehicle-specific and the two sides are often different. When requesting one you may need to specify: vehicle registration, make and model, model year, engine size or code, manual or automatic gearbox, nearside or offside, front or rear position, and the ABS ring or sensor arrangement where applicable.
