The slam panel (also called the front panel or radiator support panel) is the structural crossmember at the front of the engine bay that the bonnet latch, headlight mountings and front bumper support all bolt to. Every VW Golf from Mk1 through to the current Mk8 has one regardless of engine, trim or body style, so if you need one it will exist on your car.
The Mk7 Golf ran from 2013 to 2020, so a 2012 car would be a Mk6 (2008–2013) and a 2016 car would be a Mk7 — these are entirely different platforms and the slam panel will not interchange between them. Make sure you know which generation your car is before approaching a breaker, as mixing Mk6 and Mk7 parts is a common search mistake.
The Golf Mk7 was facelifted in 2017, and while the core platform is the same, the front-end geometry around the headlights, grille and bumper can differ between pre-facelift (2013–2017) and post-facelift (2017–2020) cars. You should confirm with the breaker whether the specific slam panel interchanges across that 2017 boundary by checking your registration against their donor vehicle.
Trim level does not affect slam panel fitment; a panel from an S, SE, Match, GTD, GTI or R within the same generation and facelift period comes from the same pressing. You may find differences in brackets or pre-drilled holes for certain sensors or headlight washers on higher trims, so mention your exact spec to the breaker so they can check the donor car matches closely enough.
On the Mk6 Golf (2008–2013), the slam panel is part of the front-end structure which is shared across body styles within the generation, so hatchback, estate and cabriolet cars use the same basic panel. Door count and roof style do not affect the front slam panel, so you don't need to restrict your search to the same body style as your own car.
A 2009 Golf is a Mk6, which ran from 2008 to 2013 with no significant facelift to the slam panel area during that run. Tell the breaker it is a Mk6 Golf and give them your full registration so they can verify the exact spec, particularly if your car has headlight washer jets or active cruise hardware that may affect the bracket layout on the panel.
