No two door handles are quite the same across different vehicles, so getting the specifics right matters when you buy used, second hand or a replacement. Answer a few quick questions below and breakers will only quote if they have the exact matching part in stock:
No – the R107 (1971–1989) and the R129 (1989–2001) are entirely different generations with different door structures, so the handles are not interchangeable. Always quote the generation or registration to the breaker rather than just the model name.
Both years fall within the R230 generation (2001–2012), so there is a reasonable chance of compatibility, but the R230 received a facelift in 2006 which may have brought minor trim-panel changes around the handle surround. Name the generation and confirm across that 2006 facelift boundary with the breaker before buying.
Yes – NS (nearside, passenger/left) and OS (offside, driver/right) door handles are handed and are not interchangeable. Always tell the breaker which side you need when requesting a quote.
Engine and trim designation do not affect door handle fitment on the SL; the handle is determined by generation and side, not by whether the car is an SL350, SL500, or SL63 AMG. You may find cosmetic differences such as chrome versus body-colour finishes between specification levels, but those are preference rather than fitment issues and a handle can be resprayed or colour-matched.
The R230 ran from 2001 to 2012 and the R231 from 2012 onwards, and these are distinct generations with different body structures, so the handles are very unlikely to be compatible. Confirm with the breaker quoting both the generation code and your registration to be certain.
Colour does not affect whether a handle physically fits your car – fitment is governed by generation and side (NS or OS). A handle in a different colour can be resprayed or refinished, so do not let an unmatched colour put you off an otherwise correct part.
