The steering rack is generation-specific, so a rack from the wrong generation is very unlikely to fit, and you should always match to your generation first. Give the breaker your registration to confirm the exact build year, as early and late examples within a generation can differ in detail.

This swap crosses the generation boundary between the X250 (2006–2014) and the X290 (2014–present), which are different platforms with different front-end geometry. The steering racks from these two generations are not the same, and a 2013 unit is very unlikely to bolt straight into a 2015 van. Confirm the exact part numbers with the breaker against both registrations before ordering.

On the Ducato, payload and GVW rating can influence the front axle and suspension components, because higher-rated variants are built to handle greater loads. It is worth checking the weight plate in your van's door jamb and passing that rating to the breaker alongside your registration, rather than relying on the model name alone. The breaker can then check whether the rack from their donor van matches your specification.

Trim level names like Comfort or Maxi on the Ducato generally relate to interior specification or body length rather than changes to the steering rack itself, so trim alone should not affect fitment. What matters far more is the generation, engine size, and GVW rating of the donor van versus your own. Be aware that interior or cosmetic parts from different trim levels may look different, but for the steering rack this is not a concern — match on the mechanical specification instead.

Engine size can influence front-end components on vans because heavier or more powerful engines sometimes require uprated suspension and steering parts to cope with increased loads. It is sensible to tell the breaker both your engine size and your van's GVW rating so they can source a rack from a closely matched donor vehicle. Confirm the part number directly with the breaker against your registration rather than assuming all engines within a generation share the same rack.

LHD and RHD Ducatos have mirrored steering column and rack arrangements, so a rack from a left-hand-drive van will not be a direct swap for a UK right-hand-drive vehicle. Always make sure the breaker confirms the donor van is right-hand drive before agreeing a price. Fitting an incorrect side rack is a significant safety and legal issue, so do not assume compatibility without explicit confirmation.
