Cheap BMW 8 Series Steering Rack

The current BMW 8 Series (G15 coupé, G14 convertible, G16 Gran Coupé) has been in production from 2018 onwards, so all used racks in the market will be from this single generation. There was also an earlier E31 8 Series built from 1990 to 1999, which is a completely different car with no parts compatibility with the modern G-series. Always confirm the generation with your breaker against your registration before ordering.

Both the 2019 and 2022 cars sit within the same G15/G14/G16 generation launched in 2018, so there is a reasonable chance of compatibility. However, steering rack specification can vary with engine output – the M850i xDrive, for example, may use different components to the 840i – so confirm the engine variant of the donor car against your own when speaking to the breaker.

Engine size and output can matter here, as higher-powered variants may have different steering system specifications, so it is worth matching the engine of the breaker's donor car to yours. Trim level alone – such as M Sport versus standard specification – does not determine the steering rack, and any cosmetic differences between trim lines are irrelevant to fitment. Confirm the engine code of the donor car with your breaker against your registration to be sure.

These variants share the same G-series platform and body, but the M850i carries significantly more power and torque than the 840i or 840d, which can influence steering system specification. We would not confidently state that the rack from an 840i will directly interchange with one from an M850i, so treat these as potentially different applications. Ask your breaker to cross-reference the part number from the donor car's registration against yours before purchase.

The G-series BMW 8 Series received a mild refresh around 2022, updating styling and equipment but leaving the fundamental platform unchanged. Whether that refresh involved any change to steering rack specification is not something we can state with certainty, so if your car is a 2022 or later model and the donor is pre-2022 (or vice versa), treat the model year boundary as a reason to double-check. Ask your breaker to verify part numbers against both registrations before committing.

The G15 Coupé, G14 Convertible, and G16 Gran Coupé are distinct body styles sharing the same generation, and steering rack fitment may or may not differ between them. We would not assume a rack from a G16 Gran Coupé is a straight swap onto a G15 Coupé without confirmation.
